Reading Workshop

Guided Reading

Grade Level: 2
Time Required: 20 minutes
Materials: Robert and the Rocket by Leesa Waldron
Dry erase board

Teaching Strategy: Small group
Reading Strategy: Using picture clues
Teaching Points: Character traits and feelings
Some Procedures Used:
1. The children will do a book walk to help them predict what the story will be about.
2. I will tell the children to pay close attention to the illustrations in the story because they offer additional information that is important to the story.
3. Many words in the story have suffixes. The children can chunk the words in order to read the difficult words.
4. We will fill in a word web of Robert’s character traits and feelings.

Below you will see us talking about the illustrations in the story.

Individual Reading Conference
I had an individual reading conference with Glen Peters after I assessed him with a running record on a guided reading book. He read The Smallest Mouse by Diane DeFord, which is a Benchmark 6 book. This correlates to a Level H book, a first grade level book. This also indicates that Glen is below average in reading. In addition, the book turned out to be on frustration level for Glen.

As a result, we had a reading conference so I could learn from Glen any problems he might have been having. First, Glen told me the book was too hard for him to read because the words were too difficult. However, Glen went on to tell me the pictures in the story were the best help to him. I suggested two reading strategies that I thought would help Glen at this point. One strategy was to slow down and think what makes sense to him while reading. The second strategy I suggested was to look at the pictures to help him with unfamiliar words. I also told him to pick books from the library and the classroom library that were on levels G and F.

Glen told me that reading is not his favorite thing to do, but he believed that he is an improved reader. He does like to try reading chapter books. The conference reassured me that Glen is not a confident reader. I did learn books are more enjoyable for Glen if they are Arthur books or if they have forest animals in them. This information will help me next time when I go to choose books for him when we do guided reading.
