Company Financial, Industry & Investment Sources
This assignment guide was created to assist students in locating company financial, industry & investment sources to complete Dr. Javine's investment project involving the an analysis of an industry and the companies within that industry.
Students are specifically asked to assess an industry's performance over the last 5 years as well as its potential future performance over the next 1-5 years. Specific stocks are to be chosen to buy/sell and a detailed analysis of those companies provided.
The guide focuses on suggested strategies and best places to begin research efforts. For information & assistance in using any of the sources, please contact library staff:
Selecting an Industry
For the purposes of this analysis, the firms in an industry will be those covered by Business & Company Resource Center.

If you prefer to browse without an industry in mind at the beginning of your research:
- Click on the 'Industry' graphic from the database home page
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on 'Browse NAICs codes'
- Begin to locate an industry of interest by 'Selecting one of the following high-level NAICS code groups to display industry codes within the group '
- Continue to click on appropriate industry descriptions until you click on a link and it leads you to industry overview sources and tabs are at the top of the screen.
Notes:
(1) Click on the 'Company Profile' tab at the top of the screen for a list of companies in that industry.
(2) Clicking on each company's name on the results list will lead you to specific information about each company.
If you have a favorite company and want to research the industry that company is a part of:
- Click on the 'Company' graphic from the database home page
- Enter a company name, that is part of the industry you want to research, choose 'ultimate parent', then click on 'Search'
- From the results list, click on the specific company.
- Review the tabs across the top of the screen and click on 'Industry Overview'.
- Choose the specific SIC/NAICs Code from the list as needed.
- From the results list, click on specific industry overview sources.
- Also, click on the 'Company Profile' tab at the top of the screen for a list of companies in that industry.
