Financial Statements/SEC Documents

This guide lists sources which provide information and access to company financial statements and SEC documents.  Financial statements are available for any U.S. company that is publicly traded.  Private companies do not file with the SEC, so statements are not available.  If a company is a subsidiary of a parent company, look for financial statements of the parent company since the subsidiary's information is not filed separately.

Largest Internet annual report service.  Browse by exchange, industry, or sector OR search by company name or ticker symbol.

Edgar Company Search
The SEC’s EDGAR database provides free public access to corporate information, allowing you to quickly research a company’s financial information and operations by reviewing registration statements, prospectuses and periodic reports filed on Forms 10-K and 10-Q. Company filings are available from 1994.

Investor Relations Information Network (IRIN)
Provides over 3,500 annual reports online.  Use this service to show how the annual report actually looks with photos/graphics.  View the reports online or request that a copy be sent to you via snail mail.

LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe

  • From L-N's front page, click on the 'Business' category on the left tool-bar.
  • On the next screen, click on the link to 'SEC Filings & Reports'.
  • Type your company name or ticker symbol in the first dialogue box.
  • Select from among the SEC documents from the pull-down menu.
    Note: Annual Reports are textual only.  SEC document descriptions are listed below the search boxes.
  • Choose a date field as appropriate (suggest 'previous 2 years).
  • Click on the 'search' button.

Mergent Online

  • Do a 'Basic Search' for the company name or ticker symbol.
  • Click on the company name on the next search screen.
  • Click on the various tabs across the top for detailed information (Company Financials, EDGAR (SEC Documents)).

The Public Register's Annual Report Service
Provides access to thousands of annual reports after a simple/free registration process. Use this service to show how the annual report actually looks with photos/graphics. View the reports online or request that a copy be sent to you via snail mail.

Standard & Poor's Research Insight Database
(MCOB Lab Use Only)

    S&P Research Insight is available for use in the MCOB Labs. If you are a first time user, please ask for assistance by contacting Deborah Harrington to set up an appointment.

    S&P RI Manuals are now available on the Web in PDF Format. To learn the basics of the system, which includes more information on how to run preformatted reports such as the ones outlined below, refer to the 'Getting Started Guide'.

    To run various financial statements/reports:

    1. From the left toolbar menu, click on the 3rd button from the bottom 'Open Report' .
    2. Scroll down the list of folders and double click on any of the following folders: Balance Sheets, Cash Flow Statements, Combined Reports, Common Size Statements, Income Statements or Trend Reports.
    3. Highlight the report you wish to run and click 'Finish' at the bottom.
    4. A box that helps you enter data to run the report will appear on the screen. Enter the ticker symbol and click 'OK' at the bottom of the screen.
    5. When the report appears, click the print button.

      To save your report for use in Excel:

      1. Pull down the 'File' menu at the top of the screen and select 'Save As'
      2. Name file and saves as a .txt file
      3. Click the button on the right 'Text Options'
      4. Click on 'Comma' and 'Use Labels'
      5. Click OK
      6. Put disk in drive--choose--directory--OK

      To open your file in Excel:

      1. Open Excel
      2. Use the 'File' pull-down menu and select 'Open'
      3. Browse and locate drive and file name [see 'All Files]
      4. Choose, 'Delimited', then Next
      5. Take the check mark off of 'Tab' and click on 'Comma', then Next
      6. Click 'Finish'
      7. Review Columns and Rows in Excel in comparison to your printout and adjust as needed.

  • Use the pull-down menu under 'Source' to choose 'NAARS-Annual Reports, 1972-1984' OR 'NAARS-Annual Reports, 1984-1995'.
  • Choose a date field as appropriate.
  • Click on the 'search' button.

CAROL is an on-line service offering direct links to the financial pages of listed companies in Europe and the U.S.  Requires a free registration process.

Blakeman provides a wealth of information and links arranged per country.
