Professional Component

The Professional Component requires five (5) semesters to complete and is comprised of both didactic and clinical courses pertinent to the professional practice of Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The professional component begins in the Fall Semester of the junior year and proceeds for two semesters. The senior year begins with the Summer Semester. The professional component is completed at the end of the Spring Semester of the senior year.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Professional Component is not automatic!

A limited number of students are selected each Spring Semester prior to entering the Professional Component in the Fall Semester. Admission is based on a combination of grade point average, motivation, and aptitude for a career in Clinical Science. The application and supporting documents must be submitted prior to December 1 of the year prior to the year which admission is desired. The professional phase will begin in the Fall Semester. Students must be prepared to attend classes scheduled during that Fall Semester on a full time basis. All students admitted to the Professional Component must complete any remaining prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or better before the beginning of Fall Semester.

Students are selected by various criteria that predict probability of success as a laboratory professional. Selection criteria include:

  1. science/mathematics grade point average to include course work in Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics and Infectious Diseases or Microbiology;
  2. overall grade point average; and
  3. interview with faculty to assess candidate's aptitude for the program and the profession.

In order to be considered for admission to the Professional Component of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. The following preprofessional courses must be completed by the end of the Fall Semester in which the application for admission is submitted: General Biology (BLY 121), Human Anatomy & Physiology I (BMD 114), Infectious Disease (BMD 210), General Chemistry I & II (CH 131, 132), Precalculus Algebra (MA 112) and Statistics (ST 210).
  2. The student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.40 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all college courses and a GPA of 2.40 or higher in BLY 121, BMD 114, BMD 210, CH 131, CH 132, MA 112 and ST 210.
  3. All preprofessional requirements must be completed prior to the beginning of the Fall Semester of the Junior year. Students may not defer preprofessional prerequisite courses to the Junior year.
