About Children's and Women's Hospital

The University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hospital is one of six free-standing hospitals in the nation providing care to children, women and infants. We serve a large region, which extends in an arc from eastern Louisiana, through the state of Mississippi, to northern Alabama, to northwest Florida. We provide services to meet the needs of women during all the stages of pregnancy, throughout labor and delivery and for gynecological needs. Our infant services include a Level III Neonatal Intensive care unit and a Newborn nursery. Our pediatric services include a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, an Infant Toddler Preschool Unit and a Schooled-age, Adolescent unit. Emergency sevices are available to evaluate and treat pediatric patients and to triage obstetrical patients to the Labor and Delivery suite. Surgical services are available for our population of women, children and infants.

The hospital is staffed with appropriate numbers of physicians, nurses and allied health care workers to provide for the needs of our patients around the clock. The OB and Pediatric departments have physicians in house-24 hours/day. The Anesthesiology department provides physician coverage for deliveries around the clock. Emergency services is also staffed with a physician 24 hours/day.

The Labor and Delivery Unit has 15 private birthing rooms capable of meeting the needs for labor, delivery and recovery of the patient. There are three high risk delivery rooms and a five bed recovery room.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has a bed capacity for 70 infants. A progressive care nursery is included within the NICU and can accomodate 28 infants. The NICU cares for the critically ill newborn with medical or surgical needs.

The Mother-Baby Unit has 33 private rooms for the newly delivered mother. Rooming-in is available for those mothers desiring these arrangement. There is also a Newborn Nursery with the ability to accommodate 30 infants.

The High Risk OB unit has 39 private rooms. This unit is designed for the women at risk with medical or surgical problems prior to and after delivery. The High Risk OB Unit and the Labor and Delivery Unit are the regional referral center for high risk obstetrical patients for the Gulf Coast region.
