About Us

Child Life is a special play therapy program designed to help children cope with hospitalization. We help address the physical and emotional needs of our young patients by promoting a child-friendly, family focused environment.

The importance of play is paramount to children. Play allows children to express their feelings, promoting a sense of mastery and facilitating coping. Medical play and preparation are important aspects of our Child Life Program.

Medical supplies, along with a teaching bear, are utilized to help prepare children for upcoming procedures. We share explanations with children on a level they are able to understand. Through these experiences, any misconceptions or concerns the child has about their treatment can be addressed. And, as a member of the Starlight Starbright network, our patients can communicate with hospitalized children from around the country.

The Child Life staff works with the pediatric health care team throughout the hospital. Our Child Life department includes a full-time Certified Child Life Specialist and a full-time Certified Recreational Therapist.

Activity areas designed to continue a child’s normal growth and development are located throughout the hospital. The Tree House on the fifth floor is a pediatric playroom providing opportunities for children to play with others in a non-threatening environment. This playroom allows children to do what comes natural to all children – play!

Our Class Act program, located on the fourth floor, is geared toward school-aged patients. Mobile County Public School System teachers staff this program and provide daily instruction for hospitalized kids in grades K-12. When schoolwork is completed, the area becomes a recreation center for children to socialize and provide peer support.
