Class Act Program
Our Class Act Program is a unique
program designed to help children continue their education and personal
growth during periods of illness. The program is specially helpful
to children fighting chronic illnesses, but also helps patients
who enter the hospital for just a few days. Based out of the Class
Act room, the program is a cooperative effort between the hospital
and the Mobile County School System. Two Mobile County Public schools
teachers staff this program and provide daily instruction for hospitalized
kids in grades K-12.
Children who
attend the Class Act program receive credit for the class work they
do while in the hospital and are counted as present for schools.
But, the benefit this program provides the patient goes beyond education.
Research has demosntrated that children who continue their schoolwork
heal and recover quicker and require less medication. For the young
patient, schoolwork provides productive activities, and has demosntrated
a reduction in the stress associated with returning to regular school
classes.
After schoolwork
is completed, the Class Act room becomes a recreation center for
children to gather, socialize and provide peer support. Arts and
crafts, computers, games, Internet, music and television are all
part of the activity center.
