    A. Inpatient Experience
    Rounds in ICUAt the University of South Alabama (USA) Medical Center the fellow is an active participant in the pulmonary consultation service, which provides approximately 250 inpatient pulmonary consultation per year. The fellow actively participates in the supervision and interpretation of studies performed in the Pulmonary Function and Exercise Laboratory which is under the medical direction of one of the pulmonary division faculty members. This facility performs approximately 1,700 procedures per year including cardiopulmonary exercise testing and bronchoprovocation procedures. The fellow also assists in the Bronchoscopy Laboratory, which is responsible for approximately 400 bronchoscopies per year. In addition, fellows at USA Medical Center are part of the closed medical intensive care unit team providing primary care to critically ill patients. Fellows assigned to the Consult service provide consultative services to other services at USA Medical Center and the nearby USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital.

    At Infirmary West the fellow assists in the medical/surgical intensive care unit and is responsible for both primary care of critically ill patients as well as consultative care in the intensive care unit and other areas of this hospital. Fellows also rotate with a private practice pulmonary group at Mobile Infirmary where they perform procedures (including bronchoscopies) and participate in pulmonary consultative services.

    B. Outpatient Experience
    Lobby/Check-In AreaOutpatient experience for the fellow consists of a continuity clinic one-half day per week where the fellow evaluates new patients as well as follows patients throughout the fellowship. This is a pulmonary subspecialty clinic to which patients with respiratory complaints and disorders are referred. In addition, the fellow participates in a cystic fibrosis clinic, attends the Mobile County Health Department Tuberculosis Clinics, attends the pulmonary hypertension clinic, and the Sleep Disorders Center clinic (when assigned to the Sleep Disorders rotation at Infirmary West).
