Our Headache Center is recognized nationally for its work in identifying the mechanisms by which migraine and other primary headache disorders exert their clinical effects and for assisting in the development of new therapies to treat those disorders. Amongst the new headache treatments the Center has helped to develop are injectable and oral sumatriptan (Imitrex), oral zolmitriptan (Zomig), intranasal DHE (MIgranal), divalproex sodium (Depakote), topiramate (Topamax), zonisamide (Zonegran) and botulinin toxin (Botox). The Center also serves as a multi-state regional resource for referral of patients whose headache disorders have proven to be particularly resistant to diagnosis, treatment or both.
The clinical service we provide at the Center is primarily consultative. Although we do follow a relatively small number of patients on a regular basis and all patients participating in clinical research trials that require extended follow-up, this is not a traditional doctor’s office where one returns at specified intervals for follow-up visits. More typically we evaluate new patients and provide them and their referring physicians with a diagnosis and treatment strategy that they themselves will implement.
