Residency Program

Welcome to the University of South Alabama’s Pathology Residency Training Program.

Stedman’s Medical Dictionary defines a pathologist as “a physician who specializes in anatomical, experimental, or clinical pathology and practices chiefly in the laboratory as a consultant to clinical colleagues, especially with reference to histologic diagnoses on tissue removed for biopsy, selection of diagnostic tests and interpretation of laboratory results, performing postmortem studies, and designing and participating in research of various types.”  A pathologist, then, is a diagnostician (including practice, evaluation, and supervision), a consultant, and an investigator.  The basic objectives of the program are to provide the experiences and education necessary to assume these multiple roles.  To become a practicing diagnostician, the program seeks to provide exposure to the full spectrum of diagnostic procedures in anatomic and clinical pathology and to provide basic competence in interpretation of these diagnostic evaluations.  Beyond basic competence in interpretation, the program also strives to provide the basic competence in evaluation and supervision of laboratory testing needed to be a successful laboratory manager.
