Olden received his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate in Brooklyn, N.Y. He completed his internship in categorical medicine and residency in internal medicine at UCLA-San Fernando Valley Medical Program in Sepulveda, Calif. Following his residency training, Olden was a teaching fellow in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston, while performing his residency in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In 1981, he was a postgraduate scholar in internal medicine and psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine.

In a career spanning a quarter of a century, Olden has been successful in a wide range of medical and scientific endeavors. In 1999, he received the American College of Gastroenterology Clinical Scholar Award. In 2000, he was a Harvard Macy Scholar in Medical Education. He has authored 55 peer-reviewed articles and has been awarded numerous grants for gastroenterological and psychiatric studies.

In addition to his appointment at Mayo Medical School, Olden has served on the faculty of St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco, Calif.; DVA Medical Centers in San Francisco and Martinez, Calif.; University of California-San Francisco; Oakland DVA Outpatient Clinic in Oakland; and University of California Davis School of Medicine in Davis, Calif.

Olden has served on the editorial boards of American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Medicine and Psychiatry, and currently serves on the editorial board of American Journal of Gastroenterology. He is a member of numerous medical societies including the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Psychiatric Association. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as well as the American Board of Internal Medicine in the subspecialty of gastroenterology.
