The University of South Alabama Digestive Health Center and the American College of Gastroenterology are working together during March to raise the awareness in our community of colorectal cancer and its prevention. |

| What: |
March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 106,680 new cases of colon cancer and 41,930 new cases of rectal cancer in 2006 in the United States.
Underscoring the importance of awareness and screenings, most colorectal cancers do not cause symptoms in early stages of development when treatment is most effective. A high percentage of deaths from colorectal cancer are preventable. |

During the month of March, USA College of Medicine faculty affiliated with the USA Digestive Health Center are available to provide detailed information on colorectal screenings, cancer prevention strategies, as well as local colorectal cancer statistics and new trends in treatment. |
