Lunch and Learn Series: "GERD and Esophogeal Cancer"

The University of South Alabama Physicians Group Lunch ‘N’ Learn lecture series for February will feature Dr. Matthew D’Alessio, a surgical oncologist at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. His lecture, entitled “GERD and Esophageal Cancer,” will take place on Feb. 21, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. at the Infirmary West Conference Room and will provide new information understanding the relationship between GERD (gastroesophageal reflux) and the risk of developing esophageal cancer.

D’Alessio specializes in minimally invasive liver, pancreas, and esophageal surgery as well as colorectal cancer.

According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, GERD and Barrett’s esophagus both can lead to esophageal adenocarcinoma, a malignant tumor of the glands. Barrett's esophagus is estimated to affect about 700,000 adults in the United States. This type of cancer is increasing rapidly in Caucasian men. One theory is that the rise relates to the increase in obesity and GERD in this population.

Esophageal adenocarcinoma is often not curable, partly because the disease is typically diagnosed at a late stage when treatments are not as effective. Optimal treatment strategies are focused on prevention, including proper management of GERD.

The lecture and lunch is provided free of charge. Reservations are required. For more information regarding the lecture or to make reservations, please call 460-7770 or email bschiavoni@usouthal.edu.
