USA Mitchell Cancer Institute to Host Conference

The University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute will host its inaugural conference, “Perspectives in Oncology: 2007,” a day-long session presenting information on new advances in cancer care, on August 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the RSA Battle House Hotel. On the preceding evening, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. case presentations and discussions about genetic breast cancer will be discussed. |

| The two-day conference targets medical professionals and features faculty from USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, the Infirmary West Oncology Group, the Coastal Neurological Institute, and the University of Iowa. The goal of the conference is to detail recent advances in surgical oncology, present changes in the management of cancer patients, and outline cutting edge and novel approaches for therapy. |

Dr. Mark Karwal, assistant professor at the University of Iowa, is the featured guest lecturer. He will discuss “Tailoring Treatment to Molecular Profiles to Breast Cancer.” |

The conference will also feature USA Mitchell Cancer Institute faculty and staff, including Dr. Adam Riker, chief of surgical oncology; Dr. Thomas Butler, medical oncologist; Dr. Hung T. Khong, interim chief of medical oncology; Dr. Michael Finan, chief of gynecological oncology, Dr. D. Lynn Dyess, professor of surgery at USA College of Medicine; Dr. Matthew J. D’Alessio, surgical oncologist; Dr. Roy Buschbaum, radiation oncologist; and the Dr. Michael Boyd, Abraham Mitchell Chair and director of the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. |

Additionally, Dr. David R. Clarkson of Infirmary West Oncology and Dr. Edward R. Flotte of Coastal Neurological Institute will also present. |

The conference is sponsored by the USA College of Medicine office of continuing education and offers continuing medical education credits for physicians a maximum of 8 AMA category 1 credits. CEU’s for nurses are also available and will be administered by the USA College of Nursing for credits. |
