The University of South Alabama Physicians Group Lunch ‘N Learn August lecture series will feature Dr. Adam Riker, chief of surgical oncology at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. His lecture, entitled “Risky Rays: Reducing Your Skin Cancer Risk,” will take place on Aug. 28, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. at the Infirmary West Conference Center. The lecture will provide detailed information about the link between sun exposure and skin cancer. |

In his lecture, Riker will outline the dangers of sun-bathing and tanning beds, emphasizing safe sun practices that reduce chances of developing melanoma or other skin cancers. |

| Riker is the chief of surgical oncology at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute and an associate professor of surgery at the USA College of Medicine. His office is located at 1 Mobile Infirmary Circle at the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center. |

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Since 1973, new cases of the most serious form of skin cancer, melanoma, have increased approximately 150 percent. During the same period, deaths from melanoma have increased approximately 44 percent. It is estimated that between 65 percent and 90 percent of melanomas are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. |
