Women in Science to Host GEMS Conference
| |
The Women in Science Group will be hosting the Girls Exploring Math and Science (GEMS) Conference, formerly called the Expanding Your Horizons Conferences, as their major annual event, on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the USA Main Campus. |
| The purpose of the GEMS Conference is to mentor young females who are interested in careers in science. The focus of this group is to address the problem of poor presentation of females in math and science professions. |
More than 300 young women are expected to attend the conference from middle schools in Mobile and Baldwin counties, as well as from surrounding areas in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. |
| The young women will be able to choose from 40 hands-on workshops which are presented by USA faculty and math and science professionals from around the Mobile area. The conference will also be staffed by over 100 volunteers, including USA faculty members, staff, undergraduate/graduate students as well as volunteers from the Mobile Public County Public School system and volunteers from around the Mobile community. |
| |
| Major funding for the conference is provided by The J.L. Bedsole Foundation and The Mary Josephine Larkins Foundation. Other sponsors and supporters of this year’s conference include the USA Women in Science, USA Colleges and Departments, the USA Office of Academic Affairs, the USA Office of Public Relations, Coca-Cola, Chevron, and Legacy Financial Planning. |
