USA Hospitals Participate In Community Disaster Drill

Medical staff at USA Medical Center tested “patients” for radiation exposure.
Medical staff at USA Medical Center tested “patients” for radiation exposure outside the hospital’s decontamination unit as part of the community-wide disaster drill.  Patients at risk would receive treatment inside the unit, which leads directly to the emergency room.

MOBILE - The University of South Alabama Medical Center and USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital participated Dec. 6 in a community-wide disaster drill coordinated by the Mobile County Emergency Management Agency.

The exercise was based on a scenario that a “dirty bomb” was detonated in downtown Mobile.  A dirty bomb is a radiological dispersal device that combines an explosive, such as dynamite, with radioactive material.  Under the exercise scenario, victims were treated at the exercise site and taken to area hospitals.

“Our hospitals are already prepared for disaster responsiveness,” said Stan Hammack, vice president for health systems at USA.  “This was an excellent opportunity to coordinate with other local and regional agencies and demonstrate our readiness.”

The exercise tested the response capabilities of first-responders in the event of a terrorist attack.
