USA Emergency Medicine Physician Honored by AMA Foundation

Dr. Melissa Costello |
Dr. Melissa Costello, assistant professor of emergency med-icine at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, was one of fifteen early career physicians recently awarded the American Medical Asso-ciation (AMA) Foundation’s 2008 Leadership Award, at the AMA Foundation’s Excellence in Medicine Awards ceremony in Washington D.C.
Costello has been an active member of the AMA since starting in the AMA Medical Student Section in 1996. She is currently serving her second term as the state chair for the Young Physicians Section of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA). Costello also serves on the MASA Council for Medical Education.

In addition, Costello serves as the medical director for the regional air medical program in Mobile. She also works with the FBI SWAT team in Mobile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Disaster Medical Assistance Team, and the Urban Search and Rescue Team.

The Excellence in Medicine Awards recipients are recognized for their outstanding leadership skills in advocacy, community service and education. The award provides medical students, residents/fellows, early career physicians and established physicians from around the country with special training to develop their skills as future leaders in organized medicine and community affairs.
