Sickle cell disease expert Dr. James R. Eckman, left, was the guest lecturer at the 2009 Sickle Cell Conference at the University of South Alabama. The lecture, titled “Bringing Hope to Healthcare in Sickle Cell Disease,” was devoted to modern aspects of the treatment of the disease, as well as its complications. Dr. Eckman serves as professor of hematology and medical oncology at the Emory Winship Cancer Institute and director of the Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, affiliated with Grady Health System in Atlanta.
