Acute Lung Injury in Sickle Cell Disease
Johnson Haynes, M.D. and Boniface Obiako |
| The primary goals of this project are to elucidate the role(s) of the sickle red blood cells (SRBC) - endothelial cell - polymorph nuclear cell (PMN) interactions in sickle cell related acute lung injury and to investigate the potential role of PMN activation in initiating pulmonary microvascular occlusion by the SRBC. |

Modulation of Globin Expression by Antisense Transcripts
Solomon F. Ofori-Scquah, Ph.D. |
| The ultimate objective of this project is the identification and in vivo evaluation of antisense oligonucleotides suitable for pharmacological application in sickle cell disease. This approach offers several potential advantages including the feasibility of combination therapy using antisense and hemoglobin F inducing drugs. |
