Level I Trauma Center
USA Medical Center is home to the region's only Level I trauma center providing the highest level of emergency care 24-hours a day. One of only four such designated centers in Alabama, it provides a systematic response to trauma that utilizes resources from all medical specialties to meet the special needs of the seriously injured patient at a moment's notice.

Nationally, more than 140,000 people die and 350,000 are disabled each year as a result of a traumatic injury. The injuries take the form of motor vehicle accidents, falls, drownings, burns and ingestion. These staggering figures help illustrate why trauma is the major cause of death in persons between the ages of 1 to 44, and the fourth leading cause of death for all age groups.

The USA Medical Center trauma team has a pre-planned coordinated response, ready to implement as soon as a call for help is received. It begins with patient care at the scene of the injury where specially trained healthcare professionals including EMT's and paramedics perform initial resuscitation, treatment and triage of injured persons. Transportation to the trauma center is facilitated by ambulance or air ambulance, where the trauma team stands ready to begin treatment along with all necessary services, including operative care, if needed.

The ability to provide this coordinated treatment by a vast array of medical and surgical specialists improves a trauma patient's chance of survival. Studies indicate that organized regional trauma care has reduced the number of fatalities that occur after injury as much as 30 percent. This improvement is attributed to an organized approach to trauma care, increased skill in resuscitation, prompt availability of surgeons, and immediate availability of operating suites.

USA Medical Center 's Level I Trauma Center is resource intensive and available to the community because of the University of South Alabama 's commitment to provide excellence in patient care, education and research, with an emphasis on highly specialized care.

USA Regional Burn Center
The University of South Alabama Regional Burn Center provides specialized care to burn and trauma patients in south Alabama, northwest Florida, southern Mississippi and eastern Louisiana. Located at USA Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, it is the only facility in the region which provides burn care from injury to recovery.

With 19 beds, including seven for intensive care, the burn center serves inpatients and outpatients with severe, life-threatening burn injuries. Patients have easy access to physical and occupational therapy.

The USA Burn Team is a multi-disciplinary group of medical professionals who have been specially trained in the treatment and care of the severely burned. The team includes physicians, surgeons, nurses, social workers, dietitians, physical therapists, occupational therapists and respiratory therapists.

The quality of life achieved by a burn patient depends on the type of care given while in the hospital. The consolidation of these disciplines improves and enhances that care and extends it to outpatients. The close proximity of related services makes care convenient and efficient for providers, resulting in better care for patients.

The USA Burn team is nationally and internationally recognized for their research, particularly in the development of artificial skin. Team members contribute to hundreds of medical publications making significant contributions in virtually every aspect of burn care. Nutrition, infection control, immunology, scarring, pain management and wound healing are some of these aspects. Research is ongoing in all disciplines, including Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition and Social Services. Burn Unit Visiting Hours

USA Cardiovascular Disease Center
The USA Cardiovascular Disease Center at USA Medical Center provides comprehensive care through intervention, prevention and treatment of heart disease. Diagnostic services including stress tests, EKG's and echocardiograms are available in the Heart Station.

The latest in interventional cardiac procedures are performed in one of two catheterization labs. Sophisticated technology combined with the desire, dedication and determination of an acclaimed professional staff allows patients to receive the finest medical care available.

USA Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center
The USA Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center provides consultation for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of children and adults with sickle cell disease. The mission of the program is to improve the lives of persons affected by this disease through clinical care, basic, clinical and psychological research, and through patient and professional education.

Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited disorder that causes red blood cells to lose their ability to carry oxygen. While the normal red blood cell is shaped like a smooth and flexible disc, the sickle red blood cell becomes sickle shaped after oxygen is released from its hemoglobin. This sickle shaped red blood cell is hard and sticky and forms blockages in small blood vessels. These blockages lead to repeated acute and chronic tissue damage, chronic anemia and severe painful episodes.

Episodic pain events, infection and lung complications are the more common problems caused by sickle cell disease. Complications may include stroke, kidney failure, damage to joints, and other debilitating or life threatening conditions.

USA Regional Stroke Center

USA Medical Center has earned the American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award, the first hospital in Alabama to be selected. Get With The Guidelines is a quality-improvement program that helps hospitals ensure patients consistently receive stroke care in accordance with the most up-to-date scientific guidelines and recommendations. This means the Regional Stroke Center at USA Medical Center provides the highest level of care for patients with stroke.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a major source of neurological disability. The USA Regional Stroke Center provides the quickest possible response time to patients suffering these "brain attacks". Through an affiliation with national study groups, patients treated at the USA Regional Stroke Center benefit from the latest breakthrough treatments. Many of these protocols can actually reverse the damage caused by stroke if administered early.

Recognizing the warning signs of stroke is the most important step in treatment. Symptoms of a stroke, or "brain attack," include sudden difficulty in breathing, weakness or numbness usually on one side of the body, loss of vision usually in one eye, and confusion. If you, or someone you know, are experiencing these symptoms, call 911 immediately. Learn more about the Stroke Center
