Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Mission

In accordance with the overall mission of the College of Engineering and the University, the department has the mission to provide students with quality, accessible undergraduate and graduate chemical engineering education, to prepare graduates for professional careers and lifelong learning, to promote the creation and dissemination of knowledge, to serve society through professional practice and community outreach and to act as a catalyst for economic and technological development of the Gulf Coast region, the State of Alabama and the Nation.

What is Chemical Engineering and what do Chemical Engineers do?

Chemical Engineering is the profession in which knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, and the other natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop economic ways of using materials and energy for the benefit of mankind.

Chemical Engineers design chemical plant equipment and devise processes for manufacturing chemicals and products, such as gasoline, synthetic rubber, plastics, detergents, cement, paper, pharmaceutical products, and electronic materials.

▼   Bachelor of Science

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.

The undergraduate degree in chemical engineering requires the completion of 126 credits. Chemical engineering students are required to take the Chemical Engineering discipline specific Fundamentals of Engineering examination of Alabama or another state prior to graduation. All electives must be approved by the student’s advisor.

The Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering offers programs leading to a degree of Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, and faculty in the Department can also advise students studying for a Doctoral degree. The programs of study are designed to provide knowledge of modern engineering concepts and practices, to prepare the graduate for the practice of engineering at a higher level of proficiency than attainable with a bachelor's degree, and at Master's level to prepare the graduate for further study towards the Doctoral degree.
