Honors students on ropes course

Joining the Honors College at South means becoming part of a community of scholars that includes other Honors students, as well as Honors Faculty and Staff.

Your honors experience begins with the Honors retreat and orientation during the week before classes start. By the time it's over, you've spent several days camping, swimming, eating, and playing with other new and established/returning honors students. This means that you start your adventure at South with a supportive group of friends and colleagues.

Back on campus, you can stay close to your new friends by choosing to live in the designated Honors hall, but you’re of course free to live elsewhere, on or off campus, if you prefer.

Wherever you choose to live, the Bethel is your new living room, study hall, game room, meeting place and sometime classroom.  A historic building dating to 1860, the Bethel has been a chapel, a theatre, and, according to some, the birthplace of the CSS Hunley,  but is now the home of the honors college. Its prime location near the center of campus makes it an incredibly valuable home base.  As an honors student, you have exclusive 24/7 access to the Bethel.

The academic year is punctuated with a host of events for the honors community, from formal occasions like the symphony night (courtesy of the USA Foundation) to more casual events like  football tailgating, movie nights, trick or treating, and potlucks. Honors students also have their own student organization – the aptly-named Honors College Association (HCA) that works to build the honors college, to improve student experiences, and to serve the campus and Mobile community.
