Education

Become a group fitness instructor or personal trainer

SouthFit offers a one-semester, non-credit class to prepare you to be a group fitness instructor or personal trainer. Both theoretical knowledge such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and kinesiology as well as hands-on skills are emphasized. The class will also provide instruction on how to obtain a nationally-recognized fitness certification or training that is right for you.

Fall 2022 class: 

Cost: $25 for USA students, $50 for non-students. Payment is due by the second class meeting. Fee includes an American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification.  Please register and pay via the Campus Recreation Portal.

Date & Times: Mondays/Wednesdays, September 7-November 2, 2:30-3:20pm in the Student Recreation Center classroom. Class is in-person and no virtual option is available.

Skills Covered: Warm-ups, cool-downs, workout design, components of fitness, cueing, posture and alignment, safety, exercise modifications, and more.

Physical Activity as part of your academic classes

Professors, would you like to tie in physical fitness to your class objectives? We would like to team up with you. Some of our current collaborations include:

  • Department of Earth Science’s Geology Field Camp
  • College of Nursing’s NU 101 students

Private lectures or fitness classes

Our staff is available for private fitness classes for your USA group with USA attendees only. Fee is $45/hour and must be paid in advance via the Campus Recreation Portal for Private Classes. Your group may choose from most of our class types. Contact sarahschrenk@southalabama.edu to schedule a class.


Student Recreation Center Tours

We are happy to give short tours (20-30 minutes) of the Student Recreation Center to First-Year Experience classes or any other group on campus.  We will also discuss the programs that Campus Recreation and Wellness offers. Please email sarahschrenk@southalabama.edu to set up a time.
