Become a group fitness instructor or personal trainer

SouthFit offers a one-semester, non-credit class to prepare you to be a group fitness instructor(G.F.I.T.) or personal trainer (P.F.I.T.). Both theoretical knowledge such as anatomy,physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and kinesiology as well as hands-on skills are emphasized. The course will also provide instruction on how to obtain a fitness certification.

Students can get a discount on fitness certifications from the American Council on Exercise.

Upcoming Certifications

G.F.I.T. (Group Fitness Instructor Training) offered every Fall Semester

Cost: $25 for USA students, $50 for USA faculty/staff/Rec Center members, and $75 non-USA. Payment is due by the second class meeting. Fee includes an American Red Cross CPR/AED certification.   Please click the “Registration” button below to register and the “Campus Recreation Portal” button to pay.

Date & Times: Fall 2019 dates will be set by the middle of August. Class will meet in the Student Recreation Center

Skills Covered: Warm-ups, cool-downs, class design, music, cueing, posture, alignment, safety, exercise modifications, and more.  This class will specifically prepare you for the NETA Group Exercise Certification.

P.F.I.T. (Personal Fitness Instructor Training)

Cost: $25 for USA students, $50 for USA faculty/staff/Rec Center members, and $75 for non-USA. Payment is due by the second class meeting. Fee includes an American Red Cross CPR/AED certification. 

Date & Times: This class will not be held in Spring 2019.  If you are interested in becoming a personal trainer and applying for a job at the Student Recreation Center, please email for information about accredited certifications and job requirements.

Physical Activity as part of your academic classes

Professors, would you like to tie in physical fitness to your class objectives? We would like to team up with you! Some of our collaborations include:

Private lectures or fitness classes

Our staff is available for private lectures or fitness classes for your university group.  Lectures can include risk factors for cardiovascular disease, hydration, ChooseMyPlate nutrition, and how to set up an exercise plan.  Fitness classes include all types of classes offered by SouthFit . We have provided private classes for:

  • Department of Visual Art’s Graphic Design students
  • Jaguar Marching Band
  • Student Center’s Finals Frenzy
  • Jaguar Athletics’ student-athletes

Group Class Description

Private lectures/classes can be held at the Student Recreation Center or your campus location.  Please email to request a private lecture/class.  The fee is $45/hour and we provide all handouts and/or equipment.

Student Recreation Center Tours

We are happy to give short tours (20-30 minutes) of the Recreation Center to Freshman Experience classes (CAS 100), Concepts of Health & Fitness classes (PE 100), or any other group on campus.  We will also discuss the programs that Campus Recreation offers.  FREE.  Please email to set up a time.
