Academic English

Students working together on a tablet

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, ELC classes for Summer 2020 will only be offered on-line.

Due to declining enrollment, we must suspend all English Language Center programs

effective with the start of the Fall 2020 semester.

The ELC's curriculum focuses on moving students through four levels of instruction (CEFR A1-B2) in less than a year. While we welcome anyone who wishes to improve his/her English to enroll in our intensive English classes, the program is designed as a gateway into the University of South Alabama's Global Path to Success

Students entering the Academic English/Pre-GPS program should already be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of personal needs.
  • Introduce him/herself and others.
  • Ask and answer questions about their daily life.
  • Interact with other people in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
