More than 200 of the area’s top young scientists will display their skills at the 47th annual Mobile Regional Science Fair, March 21-24, at the University of South Alabama.
Middle and high school students from southwest and southeast Alabama will show exhibits in botany, chemistry, Earth and space science, engineering, environmental science, math and computer science, medicine and health, microbiology, physics, social science and behavior, and zoology.
Judges from local business, industry and academic institutions will pick first- and second-place winners from a variety of categories. These students will qualify for the state competition in April. The two high school students chosen as best overall will be offered scholarships to USA and qualify for the International Science Fair in California.
Dr. Judy Stout, associate vice president for academic affairs at USA, said the University is pleased to host this year’s science fair. “For USA, this is a natural evolution to host the brightest and best middle and high school science students, many of whom will go on to college,” Stout said. “And this is a wonderful opportunity for the science fair students, parents, and teachers to be exposed to the University of South Alabama.”
The public is invited to view the exhibits at no charge from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., Friday, March 23, and 9:30 a.m.- noon, Saturday, March 24, in Jaguar Gym on the USA campus. Winners will be announced Saturday afternoon. |
