USA Students Collect Wireless Phones for Domestic Violence Victims

The Instructional Design and Development student group at the University of South Alabama is joining corporations, small businesses, and individuals in the national “Call to Protect” campaign to collect wireless phones and provide domestic violence victims with a lifeline in an emergency.

The program, started by the Wireless Foundation, Motorola and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, is designed to collect old wireless phones and refurbish, reprogram, and distribute them to victims in need. To date, thousands of people across the country have donated their phones. Unfortunately, there are an estimated four million domestic violence victims each year, so more phones are needed.

The USA IDD student group will be collecting phones and phone accessories through June 30 in the Educational Media checkout room and the department of behavioral studies and educational technology at the USA College of Education in the University Commons Building on the USA campus.

For more information on the Call to Protect campaign, call 1-888-901-SAFE or visit www.donateaphone.com. For more information about the USA collection, contact IDD Student Group President Betsy Anderton at betsyanderton@hotmail.com or Dr. Gayle Davidson-Shivers, IDD program coordinator, at 380-2861.
