MOBILE
-- The University of South Alabama has posted its largest spring
semester enrollment in the University’s 40-year history.
USA’s
2003 spring semester enrollment of 12,138 is up 482 students, or
4.1 percent, from one year ago. The University’s spring enrollment
has increased three straight years by a total of 12 percent or 1,304
students. USA’s students are also taking more classes, with
credit hours up more than 3 percent from spring 2002.
“In
reviewing our growth, it’s very apparent that students, as
well as parents, are realizing the value of a University of South
Alabama education, ” said USA Associate Vice President for
Enrollment Services Dr. J. David Stearns.
Stearns
attributed USA’s increase to a combination of greater awareness
of the University’s quality, increased academic scholarship
opportunities for new and returning students, and improved recruiting
and retention efforts.
Comparing
this spring to last, Nursing saw the greatest one-year increase
among USA’s colleges and schools, with combined undergraduate
and graduate enrollment up 25 percent to 1,311. Education grew 6.9
percent to 2,448; Arts and Sciences was up 2.2 percent to 3,144;
Continuing Education and Special Programs was up 1.6 percent to
328; Engineering grew 1.5 percent to 871; and Medicine was up 1.3
percent to 476. Other enrollments include the Mitchell College of
Business, 1,798; Allied Health Professions, 1,176; and Computer
and Information Sciences, 586.
USA
