Moak Remembered with Memorial Scholarship

The USA Mitchell College of Business has established a scholarship in memory of Dr. Donald L. Moak, chair of the department of economics and finance, who died in October after a lengthy illness. He was 65.
The Donald L. Moak Banking Scholarship will be awarded annually to an outstanding junior banking student selected by the finance faculty. It will be presented at the annual Mitchell College of Business Honors Convocation held in April.
“There can be no more fitting tribute to the life and career of Dr. Moak than the establishment of such a scholarship that will assist deserving banking students,” said Dr. Carl Moore, dean of the Mitchell

College of Business. “His memory and good work will live on through the successes of future USA scholarship recipients.”
In addition to his role at USA, Moak also served as the educational director of the Alabama Banking School, sponsored by the Alabama Bankers Association.
Prior to joining USA’s faculty in 1993, he was the Mississippi Bankers Association’s chairman of banking at the University of Mississippi, a position he held from 1976-1993.
Other former positions included senior vice president of the United Southern Bank in Clarksdale, Miss.; finance professor at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss; assistant trust officer of the former Deposit Guaranty National Bank, now AmSouth Bank, in Jackson, Miss.; executive director of the Mississippi School of Banking at the University of Mississippi in Oxford; and course coordinator and lecturer at the Graduate School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
During his distinguished career, he published numerous banking articles and authored the manual “Essentials of Loan Compliance and Documentation.”
He held memberships in the Mississippi Bar Association, Omicron Delta Kappa honor society, and Omicron Delta Epsilon and Sigma Delta Kappa professional fraternities.
Moak received his bachelor of science degree from Mississippi College, a master of science degree from the University of Mississippi, a bachelor of laws degree from the Mississippi College School of Law, and his doctorate from the University of Mississippi. He also graduated from the Graduate School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University and Commercial Lending School at the University of Oklahoma.
