The University of South Alabama’s Fine Art and Literary Magazine, Oracle, has been chosen by the University and College Designers Association for an award of excellence in its UCDA 34th Annual Design Competition. Oracle received the prestigious award, selected as a one of a group of award winners from among 1,300 print entries reviewed.
Oracle was on display in the 2004 UCDA Design Show, held recently in Vail, Colo.
Oracle faculty advisors are Dr. Ellen Harrington, assistant professor of English, and Diane Gibbs, an instructor in the department of art and art history.
“The students are responsible for every aspect of the publication, including selection, design, and production, and they have every reason to be proud of Oracle,” Harrington said. “We have gotten great feedback on the quality of Oracle from USA students, faculty, and administration, as well as the community. We are really grateful for the University’s support.”
Gibbs attributes the students' success with Oracle to their talent and hard work. “We pulled this issue together quickly with a team of first-timers. I am very proud of their ability to organize, as well as their design. The students worked long hours placing the writing and art selections, and they won this award for their first design as a team,” Gibbs said.
The students involved in the award-winning Oracle are: Amanda Day, art director, a junior graphic design major from Mobile; Andy Baker, editor, a graduate of the English master’s degree program from Barnstable, Mass.; Jason Clark, designer, a junior graphic design major from Mobile; Marissa Miller, designer, a junior graphic design major from Mobile; and Sharon Samples, designer, a junior graphic design major from Mobile.

University of South Alabama College of Arts & Sciences
As the largest college in the University, the College of Arts and Sciences includes 19 departments and several interdisciplinary programs offering 25 majors, 33 minors and one certificate program.
The college also provides the core liberal arts education for all University students, introducing them to a broad spectrum of knowledge in each of four main areas: the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, and fine and performing arts.
