Miss USA Scholarship Competition Scheduled for October 28

The contestants for the 2007 Miss University of South Alabama Scholarship Program will compete for more than $4,000 in scholarship money.

“Around the World” is the theme for this year’s event that will be held at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28 at the USA Mitchell Center Arena. Admission is $3 for students and general admission is $5. The souvenir program booklet is $5.

“The scholarship program will afford the winner and runner-ups with an opportunity to earn money to help pay for their educational expenses while attending USA, said Dr. J. David Stearns, associate vice president for enrollment services at the University. “This scholarship program also allows the young women to showcase their talent, evening gown, swimsuit and interview skills.”

This Miss USA Scholarship Program is a preliminary to the 2007 Miss Alabama and Miss America Pageants.

Communication freshman Kristin Renee Coker, age 19 of Hoover, Ala., daughter of Jim and Gilda Coker, will perform a jazz dance. Her platform is “Watering Malawi.”    
Biology and Pre-Medicine junior Molly Ann Del Santo, age 21 of Long Beach, Miss., daughter of David and Dae Del Santo, will perform a guitar solo. Her platform is “Cultural Awareness and Acceptance.”

  Civil Engineering junior Morgan Alise Ellis, age 21 of Mobile, daughter of Chuck Ellis and Wayne and Deborrah Sessions, will perform a vocal selection. Her platform is “Building Self-Confidence.”

      Therapeutic Recreation senior Hannah Tamukay Fornah, age 21 of Mobile, daughter of Phillip and Hannah Fornah, will perform a dance. Her platform is “Assisting Victims of Domestic Abuse.”

Biology senior Mary Hong Harpen, age 20 of Mobile, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Michael and LyDi Harpen, will perform a piano solo. Her platform is “Education in the Arts.”       Biomedical Sciences senior Grace Destin Landers, age 21 of Leighton, Ala., daughter of Drs. Macon and Karen Landers, will perform a jazz dance. Her platform is “Empowering Seniors.”

  Finance junior Sara Katherine Long, age 20 of Florence, Ala., daughter of Allen and Patty Long, will perform a piano solo. Her platform is “Make-a-Wish Foundation.”

      Political science junior Andrea Elise Owen, age 21 of Mobile, daughter of Mark and Lisa Owen, will perform a jazz dance. Her platform is “Beyond the Glass Ceiling.”

Music senior Elizabeth Marie Pirtle, age 21 of Billingsley, Ala., daughter of John and Kay Pirtle, will perform a vocal selection. Her platform is “Recognizing the Artist in Everyone.”

Her platform is “An Outcry for Help-Taming Diabetes.”       Physical Education junior Dwyanetta LiMai Thomas, age 21 of Misawa, Japan, the daughter of Elroy and Mosetta Page, will perform an aerobic dance. Her platform is “Breaking the Mold: Promoting Positive Self-Image and Individuality.”
