The University of South Alabama introduced the winners of its largest and most prestigious academic scholarship at a recent reception at the Mitchell College of Business.

The Abraham Mitchell Scholarship, endowed by the local businessman and philanthropist, is USA’s largest, privately funded academic scholarship program. Since 1999, the Abraham Mitchell Scholarship program has awarded full scholarships to elite students who demonstrate top high school academics, test scores and leadership skills.

The scholarships include tuition, room, board, fees, books and a laptop computer. To date, 58 students have received the scholarships, for a total of more than $1.4 million. The average grade point average of the current Mitchell Scholars is 3.86 on a 4.0 scale.

Mitchell addressed the group of nine freshman scholarship students at the event and presented them with new laptop computers. Mitchell College of Business Dean Dr. Carl Moore and business faculty members also welcomed the students.
