USA Student Receives First-Place Award in Business Simulation Game

University of South Alabama Mitchell College of Business alumnus Joshua Kohn received a first-place award as a champion of champions in an invitational, inter-university business simulation game. His company was the overall best-performer in an eight-firm industry consisting of past champions of the GLO-BUS Business Strategy Simulation, a global online business simulation exercise for students.

Kohn, 31, participated in the game this summer as part of his senior-level, capstone seminar class at the Mitchell College of Business. A native of Decatur, Ala., he graduated with a bachelor’s in accounting in July.

For purposes of the competition, Kohn crafted an entire business model for a digital camera company. When he moved on to the global competition of the game, he was asked to discuss the manufacturing, labor practices, human resources policies, and environmental impact of his company.

Dr. William Gillis, assistant professor of management at the Mitchell College of Business, said his student’s success in the class translated into success in the international competition.

“It was neat to see someone take the ideas in class and apply them,” Gillis said. “It is like a sports competition for computer-minded business people.”

In recognition of Kohn's company’s industry-leading performance, he received a Grand Champion certificate.  He will also be inducted into the GLO-BUS Hall of Fame. He plans to begin his graduate studies at the Mitchell College of Business next year.
