The University of South Alabama’s Gerontology Club has won $500 from the Chris Myers Nissan “Extra Mile” contest for their efforts promoting intergenerational activities and community involvement, including their participation in “healthy senior initiatives.”

The gift was presented to Aimee Brinkman, who is the current Gerontology Club president, and Sara McAfee, the former club president.  “The Gerontology Club helps to provide students with the opportunity to work with older adults in the community,” McAfee stated upon receiving the award.  She also stated the money would be used to create an award for student service within the USA programs in Gerontology.

Dr. Roma Hanks, chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Department and faculty sponsor for the Gerontology Club said “The club is very interested in creating interactions between students and senior citizens.”

The club has over 35 members and works to bring the community together by sharing in fellowship with all age groups.  It is now part of the Center for Generational Studies, an organization that aids students with research and internship opportunities through its partnership with the university. 

The club has hosted several community awareness events including pet food drives and the Annual Grandfriends’ Mardi Gras Parade.
