Dr. Wendy Goldman, professor of history at Carnegie Mellon University, will deliver a lecture, “Life on the Home Front: The Soviet Experience in World War II,” at the 2013 University of South Alabama Howard F. Mahan Lecture Series to the held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 at the John W. Laidlaw Performing Arts Recital Hall. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.
Goldman is a political and social historian of Russia and the Soviet Union. She has authored numerous award-winning books including “Inventing The Enemy,” which was awarded Honorable Mention for the Reginald Zelnik Book Prize in History in 2012. This award is given for an outstanding monograph published on Russia, Eastern Europe or Eurasia in the field of history.
Her book, “Women, the State and Revolution: Soviet Family Policy and Social Life,” won the Berkshire Conference Book Award for the best book in any field of history written by a woman. Her books and articles have been translated into several languages.
Goldman is working on a collaborative research project on the Soviet home front during World War II. She has also received grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Council on Eurasian and East European Research and from numerous other organizations.
She is currently the director of a faculty exchange between Carnegie Mellon and Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow. Goldman has also served as the director of the Working Class History Seminar within the Pittsburgh Center for Social History and the board of consulting editors for several journals.
In 2001, the Howard F. Mahan Lecture Series was created in honor of USA history department founder, the late Howard F. Mahan, who served as chair of the history department from 1964 until 1983. The lecture series was established in honor of Mahan’s enduring contributions to his students, colleagues, community and state. Each year, a prominent scholar visits USA to deliver a major address on a timely topic. The lecture series is co-sponsored by the by the USA Foundation.
