Cassie Fambro, Editor-in-Chief of The Vanguard, captured first place in the news writing category at the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Awards ceremony for her coverage of the fatal shooting of Gil Collar on the campus of the University of South Alabama.
Jake Howell, JagLife editor, won second place for column writing with his piece, “Making Life Mean More Than Just Class.”
The SPJ Region 3 award ceremony was held March 16 in Atlanta at Georgia State University. This region is comprised of universities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Fambro and Howell competed in the large school division, which is composed of schools with more than 10,000 students.
As a first-place winner, Fambro's work will move on to the national Mark of Excellence competition among winners from all 12 SPJ regions. National winners will be notified in late spring and will be recognized at the Excellence in Journalism 2013 conference in Southern California in August.
Fambro, a senior with a double major in psychology and communications, is from Biloxi, Miss. Howell, a senior majoring in Biology, is from Southside, Ala.
Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of Excellence Awards, honoring the best in student journalism. The awards offer categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. |
