Stephen H. Simmons, a University of South Alabama employee for 30 years, has been named vice president for financial affairs.
Dr. John Smith, acting USA president, made the announcement, which became effective July 1.
Given the current external financial climate and the importance of this position in preserving continuity in the effective management of the Universitys financial resources, I consulted with leadership of the Board of Trustees and Faculty Senate, Smith said. They concurred that this position would best be filled by someone familiar with the Universitys financial landscape, in order to be of greatest value to the University and the next presidential administration. To that end, the position was posted internally, followed by interviews of interested qualified applicants by a University search committee, which then concurred on a final selection.
Simmons replaces Wayne Davis, who retired July 1 after 35 years of service.
Prior to the appointment, Simmons was senior associate vice president for financial affairs as well as chief financial officer for athletics, manager of University computing and information systems, the departments of internal audit and risk management, the Mitchell Center, the Spring Hill Avenue campus and the Brookley Center. His former posts include senior hospital administrator for 17 years, internal auditor and chief financial officer for the University hospitals.
