Dr. David Johnson, senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of South Alabama, has been elected chairman of the Council of Alabama University Chief Academic Officers.

Dr. David Johnson, senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of South Alabama, has been elected chairman of the Council of Alabama University Chief Academic Officers for the next two years.

The CUCAO is comprised of provosts and vice presidents for academic affairs of the 14 public universities in Alabama. Council members serve in advisory capacity on academic policies and issues to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education and the Council of Presidents. The CUCAO recommends approaches to improve the quality of higher education in the state through cooperation of all its institutions of higher education through policies, studies and research related to academic programs and practices as well as reviews and comments on all academic long-range plans for higher education in Alabama.

Johnson has served USA as senior vice president for academic affairs since January 2009. A member of the University�s faculty since 1984, Johnson has a distinguished career in teaching, research and community service. He served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2002-2009. He previously served as associate dean, as well as acting chair of sociology and anthropology.

A native of Newport News, Va., Johnson received his bachelor of arts degree in political science and psychology from Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., his master of science degree in sociology from Texas A&M University, and his doctorate in sociology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
