Professional Bio

In January 2016, Melva joined USA as the first director of the Office of Special Events. She is charged with the strategic vision and overall management for the division. Over the course of her career, Melva has directly managed festivals, pageants, fashion shows, board meetings, weddings, conferences, annual conventions, and virtual events. Melva has worked with a wide array of nationally known dignitaries, including but not limited to: Vice President Joe Biden; Academy Award nominated actor Don Cheadle; Grammy award winning artists The Isley Brothers, and Sweet Honey in the Rock; Tony award winning actresses Sheryl Lee Ralph and Phylicia Rashad; former Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan, and many others. Melva’s largest event on record serviced 60,000 guests; to date, she has managed over 350 conferences (and counting.) Since joining South, Melva has led the logistics for the Brand launch event, USA Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI) Fairhope Groundbreaking, and Robert Noyce Scholars Conference for the College of Education and Professional Studies. She has won awards for her contract negotiation strategy and community event initiatives. Melva holds degrees with high honors from Howard and Columbia University respectively.
