The University of South Alabama is offering a new opportunity for faculty and students in Fall 2011. The residence hall currently under construction will feature an apartment for a “Faculty in Residence.” We hope this will begin our process of increasing faculty and student interaction by increasing their proximity to each other in our residence halls.
The Faculty in Residence will be a dynamic faculty member who is strongly supportive of undergraduate education and student success. They will have a commitment to integrating research and teaching, and will encourage students to actively participate in academic inquiry. The Faculty in Residence will also have strong classroom teaching skills and will be active in bringing academic resources into the residential setting. In addition to leading academic programming in the residence hall they will also join students for meals at the USA dining areas. Additionally, the faculty in residence will intentionally promote the integration of engaged inquiry in residential space by being available for set “hours,” which can include visiting on the halls or meeting in the another space in the building.
The Faculty in Residence will receive housing in the residence hall at no charge. He or she will also receive a nine-month meal plan through USA dining services. We require a one year commitment and we will consider renewal. We encourage all interested faculty to apply. Families are welcome. Instructions for a letter of application are attached.
