Let Us Pay for Your Master's Degree

The Pathway to Science Scholarship Program is funded by the National Science Foundation under its Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program. The program seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. The program provides funds to institutions of higher education to support scholarships, stipends, and academic programs for undergraduate STEM majors and post-baccalaureate students holding STEM degrees who commit to teaching in high-need K-12 school districts. The award received by The University of South Alabama is only intended for those students within a science discipline.

Scholarship Amounts

Each potential candidate selected will have to complete a one semester paid internship in the fall semester in which they will work: (a) in a high need secondary school; (b) with science specialists of the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative; and, (c) with university science professors to design innovative hands-on activities for secondary students. During this time candidates will enroll to take a a special education course. The stipend paid for that experience is $2,000. Upon selection into into the Noyce Pathway to Science program, each candidate will be awarded a total award package of approximately $24,000 to complete the remaining 45-hour Alternative Master's degree program in science education within a four semester time (spring semester to spring semester). Out of that amount tuition and fees will be paid and participants will be given the remainder of the funds to cover their housing, books, and other expenses. Students accepting this support will be required to teach in a high needs school for three years within the Mobile County School System provided positions are available or some other approved location within Alabama. Students failing to meet this expectation will be required to pay back the scholarship with interest to USA. A third of the scholarship amount is forgiven for each year of service. As an added bonus students will get the opportunity to travel to one state (Alabama Science Teacher Association) and one national conference (TBA) during their tenure in the program.
