Dan has been a faculty member at the University of South Alabama College of Education since 1999. He teaches courses in instructional design, performance technology, training systems, and educational research. He also advises Master's and Doctoral students, has chaired or currently chairs over 20 dissertation committees, and has served as a member on over 20 other dissertation committees. Prior to coming to South Alabama, he was on the faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Alabama and served as Instructional Technologist at California State University, Fresno. He holds a Doctor of Education in Instructional Technology from the University of Georgia, a Master's of Science in Instructional Design from the University of South Alabama, and a Bachelor's of Arts in Mass Communication from the University of Alabama. His research and consulting interests focus on how technology, organizations, and social systems influence each other. He is Co-Editor of the book Technology Integration in Higher Education: Social and Organizational Aspects published by IGI Global in 2011. In addition, he has written numerous articles and book chapters and presented his research at local, regional, national, and international conferences in locations including Montreal, Canada, London, England, and Vienna, Austria. He has served as an external dissertation reviewer for students in Australia and South Africa. He has edited a special issue of the British Journal of Educational Technology on the topic of change and information and communications technology.
He currently serves as Co-Director of the Center for Design & Performance Improvement, the North American Corresponding Editor for the British Journal of Educational Technology, and has served as a reviewer for Educational Technology Research & Development and several other journals and academic conferences. He has been Moderator of Instructional Technology Forum and Chair of the American Educational Research Association's Special Interest Group - Instructional Technology. He was elected as a member of the University of Southern Mississippi Faculty Senate and has served on and chaired a number of college and university wide committees including the Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee at USA and the Grade Appeal Council at USM. From 1984-1988, he served with the U.S. Army's Military Intelligence Corps and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany for most of that time. Dan's hobbies include gardening, travel, and cooking. He and his wife Melinda, a reading coach at a local elementary school, reside in west Mobile.
