History  
 
The University of South Alabama was chartered in 1963 by the State of Alabama as a comprehensive, coeducational institution of higher education. The University mission actively embraces the functions of teaching, research, public service, and the application of knowledge. With over 13,000 students USA is the fastest growing university in the state of Alabama.
 

The College of Engineering currently has 731 undergraduate students and 211 graduate students enrolled in one of four departments:

     
  Chemical Engineering  
  Civil Engineering  
  Electrical and Computer Engineering  
  Mechanical Engineering  
 
All of the college’s undergraduate degree programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Shown with their first date of accreditation, they are:
 
     
  B.S. in Chemical Engineering - 1985  
  B.S. in Civil Engineering - 1989  
  B.S. in Computer Engineering - 1999  
  B.S. in Electrical Engineering - 1979  
  B.S. in Mechanical Engineering - 1983  
 
The departments of Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical and Computer Engineering offer the Master of Science degree in their respective areas. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCpE) is a joint program with the School of Computer and Information Sciences.
