MINOR IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORS IN DISCIPLINES OTHER THAN ENGINEERING

Engineering students may complete a minor in disciplines other than engineering. Students desiring to do so must complete the published requirements for that subject.

Two popular minors in recent years have been mathematics and business.  Listed below are the math and statistic courses acceptable for both minor and technical elective in mechanical engineering

MA 311              Introduction to Number Theory                                               3 cr Prerequisite: MA 126

MA 316              Linear Algebra II                                                                     3 cr
Prerequisite: MA 237

MA 320              Foundations of Mathematics (W)                                             3 cr
Prerequisite: MA 126

MA 332              Differential Equations II                                                           3 cr
Prerequisites: MA 227 and MA 238.

MA 334              Advanced Calculus I                                                                3 cr
Prerequisites: MA 227 and MA 237.

MA 335              Advanced Calculus II                                                               3 cr
 Prerequisite: MA 334.

MA 354              Computer Assisted Mathematical Modeling (W) (C)                 3 cr
Prerequisites: MA 227 and MA 238.

MA 367              Combinatorial Enumeration                                                    3 cr
Prerequisite: MA 126 or consent of instructor.

MA 413              Algebra I (W)                                                                           3 cr
Prerequisites: MA 237 and one of the following: MA 311, MA 320, MA 334.

MA 414              Algebra II (W)                                                                          3 cr
Prerequisite: MA 413.

MA 434                Topology                                                                              3 cr
Prerequisite: MA 335.

MA 436              Numerical Analysis                                                                 3 cr
Prerequisite: MA 227, credit for or concurrent registration in MA 238. Students are also required to have proficiency in a programming language.

MA 437              Complex Variables                                                                 3 cr
 Prerequisite: MA 238.

MA 451              Probability                                                                              3 cr
Prerequisites: MA 227 and either MA 237 or MA 318.

MA 458              Operations Research (W)                                                         3 cr
Prerequisites: MA 227 and either MA 318 or MA 316.

ST 315                Applied Probability and Statistics                                          3 cr
Prerequisite: MA 125. Computer Lab fee.  NOTE: ST 315 is intended for students in Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics. ST 315 covers additional probability distributions.

This does not match exactly to math minor but it is very close.  Therefore these courses can be safe to take for credit for math minor and ME technical elective.  You will need written permission for this double credit on your advising form.

MINIMUM HOURS

A student must complete a minimum of 128 approved semester hours, including both general education requirements and major requirements. In some colleges/degree programs a minor is also required. Degree requirements in some programs may exceed the minimum of 128 semester hours.

Minimum number of semester hours that must be completed in the major and minor at the University of South Alabama : A minimum of 15 credit hours of courses at the 300/400 level in the major discipline must be completed at the University of South Alabama . If a minor is required in the particular degree program, 9 credit hours of courses in the minor must be completed at the University of South Alabama .
