Acceptance into the Professional Program in Mechanical Engineering

Certain criteria have to be met before a student may apply for the Professional program (junior/senior) (300/400 level) classes.

All courses must be passed with a D or better or be transferred in and the student must have a GPA of 2.00 and an engineering GPA of 2.00 in all courses at USA.  They must also maintain these grade averages to retain PCS (Professional Component Standing). (See grade exception for EH 101 and EH 102)

Course prerequisites

Most courses have prerequisites.  These courses contain the background necessary for successful performance in a course.  This requires careful planning to insure that the student has the pre-requisites for each course they intend to take.  Having a prerequisite means that you have completed that course with a D or better.

In the near future, the PAWS system will prevent your registration in courses for which you do not have the pre-requisite.

Students are encouraged to make course plans through graduation so they can graduate in a timely manner.  Curriculum worksheets and flowcharts are available which show the pre-requisites.

Semester engineering courses are offered.

ME freshmen courses ME 123 and ME 135 are offered twice a year.  Sophomore and junior EG (General Engineering) courses are usually offered three times a year.  Junior (300 level) ME courses are usually offered twice and year and senior (400 level) ME courses are offered once a year.  It is very important that you be in place and have all prerequisites for Fall senior courses.

Note: Students must obtain Professional Component Standing (PCS) before they can enroll in any 300-level mechanical engineering course.
