Mechanical
Engineering is perhaps the broadest of all
engineering disciplines, as evidenced by the
diverse positions occupied by mechanical engineers
throughout the entire spectrum of industry,
research, management, and consulting fields.
The University of South Alabama offers a four-year
program leading to a Bachelors of Science in
Mechanical Engineering. The program is fully
accredited by the Accreditation Board for
Engineering and Technology (ABET), the national
accrediting agency for engineering programs.
Our curriculum
is designed so that our graduates may enter
any area of Mechanical Engineering with
confidence, or continue their education at the
graduate level here or elsewhere.
Students study advanced mathematics,
calculus, physics and chemistry among the core
courses. They will become computer literate with
courses in computer-aided design and manufacturing
as well as having computer based analysis
solutions in many of their design courses. During
their sophomore and junior years, students take
specialized courses in fluid mechanics, solid
mechanics, dynamics, material sciences,
thermodynamics, heat transfer, and thermal and
mechanical systems analysis and design. Students
who major in mechanical engineering can complete
minors in computer science, mathematics, science
and business.
We made substantial improvements in our graduate
program. For example, the number of graduate
courses listed in the catalog was almost doubled,
and the frequency of their offerings were
increased to give the students more flexibility in
obtaining a degree.
Our faculty
is not only devoted teachers, but also
professionally active with national and
international organizations such as ASME, ASHRAE,
and SAE. Faculty members serve as consultants for
local, national as well as international firms and
organizations.
