Mechanical Engineering Student Receives Goldwater Scholarship

Mechanical Engineering junior and USA honors student Carmen Zirlott has been named a 2009 recipient of the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The Goldwater scholarship, established by Congress in 1986, is considered the premier national research award for undergraduate students in science and engineering. Zirlott, a resident of Grand Bay, AL, is one of 278 nationally-selected Goldwater Scholars.
Zirlott’s honors research involves development of a new method for measuring skin blood flow rates. Her work has potential research and medical applications, including management of peripheral vascular disease associated with diabetes. She is working under the direction of Dr. David Nelson of the Mechanical Engineering Department and Dr. James Downey of the Department of Physiology. Zirlott will present her research at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Summer Bioengineering Conference in Lake Tahoe, CA in June.
