Campus Recreation/Outdoor Adventures and Jaguar Productions: Geocaching Amazing Race

Saturday, June 20

Campus Recreation/ Outdoor Adventures  and  Jaguar Productions would like to invite you to a day of geocaching, right here on the USA campus, on Saturday, June 20 (Saturday, July 18 will be a bad weather back up date).  Geocaching is basically hunting for hidden caches with posted longitude and latitude coordinates using a handheld Global Positioning satellite receiver.

Two courses will be set up.
Course A will host a competitive event that will be a race to complete the 15 cache course that will be spread out over the entire USA campus/property and will require a car to get close (or semi close) to all of the locations.  The first team to complete the course will win four movie tickets courtesy of Jaguar Productions; everyone else gets the satisfaction of playing in the great outdoors.  A picnic will be held at the SGA pavilion for all interested participants at the conclusion/start of the event. Some terrain is difficult; please wear comfortable shoes for hiking.  You must be over the age of 12 to be on this course; each team must have a licensed driver.
Course B will be a non-competitive family, kid, and pet friendly event and will be set up in a half mile radius around the intramural field house.  A two – three mile journey will take you on a one - three hour hike looking for 13 hidden caches.  The reward: the thrill of the hunt, the camaraderie of friends and family, and the great outdoors.  A picnic will be held at the SGA pavilion for all interested participants at the conclusion/start of the event.  NOTE: some of the terrain will be difficult, so strollers will not be functional and very young children will have difficulties on parts of the course.  Wear comfortable hiking shoes.
Teams may sign up for the morning or the afternoon.  Teams must consist of at least two members (no limit to maximum size).  Each team must provide their own GPS.  (Don’t have a GPS?  We will try to place you on a team that does).  All teams for each course will start at the same time, but with a unique cache starting point in order to minimize two or more teams being at one site at a given time.  Each cache will have the coordinates of the next cache.  Teams getting “stuck” at any location may phone “headquarters” for coordinates to the next site but – on course A – will suffer a time penalty.
Course A participants must report to the Intramural field house at 9 a.m. for the morning group and at 1:30 p.m.  for the afternoon group.  Course B participants must report to the Intramural field house at 9:30 a.m. for the morning group and at 2:00 for the afternoon group.  The picnic – hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks - will be held at the SGA pavilion between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Sign up: Entry forms are available at the Student Recreation Center front desk.
Fee: $3 per team plus $5 per team member wishing to attend picnic.  (Example: team of 8 with two wanting to attend picnic: $3 plus $10 for a total of $13.)  Because food must be ordered in advance, we cannot take picnic reservations after February 19.  All fees will be refunded if event is canceled.  NOTE: each team must be captained by a USA student or staff or faculty member; other team members may be non-USA.
Deadline: 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19.  All fees returned if event is not held.
