Fourth of July Fireworks Paddle
Sunday, July 12
Come join Campus Recreation and Outdoor Adventures as we Canoe and Kayak on Blackwater River on Sunday, July 12.
This is an easy paddle on what is considered to be one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the world. We will paddle an isolated 2 ½ mile in about 2 ½ hours over a section that flows through Blackwater River State Forest. Cedar, maple, and cypress trees often form a dense canopy over the river. The water is shallow, is a tannin-stained color and was named “Oka Lusa (water-black) by the Creek Indians. Gentle curves and wide white sandbars make this a fun and picturesque trip. See pictures and a video from our trip last year on our WEB page.
We will leave Campus Recreation at 8:00 a.m. and drive two hours to Okaloosa County in Florida. We will begin our float around 11:00 a.m. and finish around 3:00 p.m. We will eat lunch on the river. We will load up and leave around 4:00 p.m. and return to Mobile around 6:00 p.m.
Cost (per person): $30 for students/one family member, $40 for faculty/staff/one family member, $50 for non-USA. Fee includes transportation, canoes, kayaks and accessories. Does not include food (we will provide coolers).
Driver needed: a faculty or staff member is needed to drive the SGA van; if you drive, we will waive $20 of your fee.
