“Not only did the 2012 UCUR experience provide me with the opportunity to "test-drive" biomedical research, but having a mentor with a shared background proved to be extremely informative. I was able to participate in a research project that combined engineering and biology, parts of which may one day help lead to the development of bronchoscopes that use fluorescence imaging to provide early detection of abnormal tissues (such as cancer) in the body. In research professions, communication is key, and UCUR afforded me the opportunity to improve my technical writing skills through mentor and peer review. In addition, through my UCUR mentor, I was serendipitously guided to the Basic Medical Sciences Ph.D. program at USA. I began the program in Fall 2012 as the next step in developing my new career! A big "hats off" to UCUR for providing such a valuable experience tailored to my situation. UCUR truly offers something for everyone, and I was fortunate to get even more than I bargained for!"

"When I came to college I never thought that I would have the opportunity to make an impact on my school, much less the scientific community. The UCUR Program at South Alabama allows for just that. The program facilitated the opportunity for me to do research while also training me to compile and present information in an appropriate fashion. However, it did this not by means of a classroom but with hands on experience.

I was able to research the effects of exercise on asthma, something that I am extremely interested in, but the idea of making an impact on it seemed far more distant than it actually was. UCUR allowed me not only to research this topic, but gave me the necessary push to dig deeper into the topic and aid in the process of making asthma a more treatable condition. I know that without the aid of this program I would not be as academically competitive or well rounded as a student. I encourage all students, regardless of discipline, to participate in this program so that they can challenge themselves and learn valuable information in the process.”
